"Where The Arts Come Alive"
On April 9, 1915, the Palace Theatre celebrated its opening night with great fanfare. Fashioned after its namesake in New York City, the Palace Theatre was (and still remains) remarkably similar to its larger cousin. It's played host to such entertainers as Jimmy Durante, Bob Hope, Harry Houdini, The Marx Brothers, and Red Skelton.
The Palace became primarily a movie house from 1930 until the early 1960s. At one point it was
even functioning as an X-rated theatre (not their finest moment!). Then it was used as classroom
space for New Hampshire College, before falling into disrepair and warehouse space. In 1974, the Palace Theatre once again celebrated opening night, after being restored. It also has
withstood floods (1980) and fire (1984).
Today the Palace Theatre is a beautifully restored 870-seat professional performing arts center, once again a
center of cultural activity for the entire Granite State.
