Snowmobiler survives after crash into Lovell Lake

WAKEFIELD — A Milton snowmobiler was pulled from the icy waters of Lovell Lake Saturday night.

Police Sgt. Jared Welman said Jason Houde, 43, was found "about in the middle" of the 538-acre lake by rescue crews shortly after 10 p.m.

"And he was probably in there for a half-hour, so he was pretty cold," Welman said.

He said Houde suffered from hypothermia, but is expected to have a full recovery.

Fire Chief Todd Nason said crews were sent to the 500 block of Lovell Lake Road after dispatchers received numerous calls; the callers included two people traveling with Houde on the ice.

Welman said Houde was located more than 1,000 feet from shore in an area of open water just east of Big Island near a cove on Brackett Road. He had been snowmobiling across the lake "and had not seen the open water," Welman said.

Rescuers were sent to the Sunshine Acres Campground side; others went to the Route 109 side of the lake.

By then, Houde had started to slip under the water.

Nason said fire department rescue crews had a difficult time reaching him, as more than 200 feet of the ice between Houde and the shorelines was very thin.

"That kept causing the rescuers to fall in," Nason said.

The rescuers eventually reached Houde, who was taken to Frisbie Memorial Hospital in Rochester.

Two others with Houde on the ice were also taken to shore; they had not fallen in.

"The ice is not safe," Nason said.
