STEWARTSTOWN — A 62-year-old Colebrook man died after suffering “a medical issue” while snowmobiling on a trail in Stewartstown on Thursday night, the N.H. Fish and Game Department said in a news release.

Fish and Game said Robert Kaffel Sr. was on Trail 21 with a friend, most of the time breaking trail in fresh snow that was still ungroomed and as deep as a foot and a half following the recent storm. Fish and Game said Kaffel’s machine got stuck while trying to get up a hill around 6:30 p.m.

Kaffel and his friend were able to free the snowmobile, but after that Kaffel suffered an unidentified medical issue, according to Fish and Game.

Kaffel’s friend and a passerby immediately started CPR and called 911. Personnel from the 45th Parallel EMS and Colebrook Fire & Rescue responded, and paramedics on scene pronounced Kaffel dead, according to Fish and Game.

Kaffel’s death is being called untimely and conservation officers and the medical examiner’s office are investigating it.
