WOODSTOCK - A man who became disoriented while hiking in the White Mountain National Forest camped overnight before finding his way back to safety, the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department said Sunday.
Thomas McGeary, 44, of Woodstock, was reported missing by relatives on Saturday after he did not return from a hike Friday afternoon, Fish and Game said in a release.
McGeary said he planned on taking a longer hike, but after becoming disoriented he made a fire and camped overnight in the woods, according to the release.
McGeary's family searched for him Saturday, then called for help, Fish and Game said.
McGeary resumed trying to find his way home in the morning, heard traffic nearby at Route 118, where he hitchhiked into town and called his family to let them know he was safe, Fish and Game said.
