CHESTERFIELD — A head-on collision Wednesday afternoon killed a 25-year-old Hinsdale woman instantly and left the driver of the other vehicle with life-threatening injuries, according to local police.

Katelyn Sylvester-Cushing was driving north on Route 9 east of Stage Road in an area known as Stoddard Hill when her 1998 Honda CRV crossed over the centerline and struck a Chevrolet Silverado 2500 driven by Thomas Cusano, 64, of Dunbarton, police said.

Chesterfield Chief Duane Chickering said Sylvester-Cushing died at the scene. Cusano was airlifted to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon and has undergone “numerous operations” for his injuries, the chief said.

Both drivers were sole occupants of their vehicles, according to police.

Witnesses interviews continue, but drugs and alcohol are not believed to have been factors in the crash.

Route 9 was closed from Route 63 to Stage Road for more than four hours following the 5:20 p.m. accident, police said.

Both vehicles had heavy front-end damage.

Chesterfield Fire, Brattleboro Fire, Spofford Fire and Westmoreland Fire and Rescue all assisted at the scene, along with New Hampshire State Police.

Witnesses or anyone with information related to the accident can contact Chesterfield police Lt. Michael Bomba at (603) 363-4233 ext. 62.
