Origin:
First granted in 1770, this town was highly disputed territory. Governor John Wentworth passed the grant to developers, including Sir John Stuart, Lord Bute, for whom the town was named Stuart. Following the Revolution when English grants reverted to the colonies, the town was incorporated as Stewartstown, using the original Scottish spelling. The famous Penobscot Indian chief Metallak is buried in the town cemetery.

More about Stewartstown:
Coleman State Park lies on the shore of Little Diamond Pond in Stewartstown, twelve miles east of Colebrook. The excellent trout fishing in Little Diamond Pond and nearby streams makes Coleman an excellent location for fishing enthusiasts. A boat launch is located within the park; small boats are permitted, but speed is restricted. It is also a good base for fall hunting. Other activities offered at the park include hiking, canoeing, snowmobiling, and cross country skiing. The park is the northern terminus of the Androscoggin Trail, a hiking path that extends 55 miles south to Berlin.
