Origin:
First chartered in 1769, this town was named for William Petty Fitzmaurice, Earl of Shelburne. Lord Shelburne was a supporter of independence for the American colonies, and at his insistence, the king recognized the independence of the United States. Remaining unsettled for quite some time after the charter was made, the town was incorporated in 1821 when Shelburne voters chose to keep the name.
More about Shelburne:
Shelburne, located at the Northern end of the Mount Washington Valley, has a grove of birch trees dedicated to the town's soldiers who served in WWII.
