Origin:
Originally known as Indian Stream, Pittsburg is distinguished by having the largest amount of land area of any township. Covering the entire top of the state, the area includes Lake Francis, the three Connecticut Lakes, and the international boundary post erected on the 45th Parallel, halfway between the North Pole and the Equator. For a while, starting in 1832, Pittsburg was home to the Indian Stream Republic, a colony that established its own constitution and separate government. The Indian Stream Republic existed for over four years, then became a part of New Hampshire, and was incorporated with Pittsburg in 1840. The name Pittsburg is in honor of William Pitt, Prime Minister of England.

More about Pittsburg:
One of the largest towns in New Hampshire in square miles is also one of the smallest (in population) in the state. Pittsburg is a naturalists paradise. Outstanding hunting, fishing, hiking, and snowmobiling has made Pittsburg a vacation destination for decades. The vacation lodging has expanded and now includes some deluxe accommodations; with hot tubs, lakefront views, fireplaces, and satellite or cable television.

Several of the cabin rental facilities also offer a guide service. The Pittsburg region is where you will find New Hampshire's "Moose Alley", the stretch of US Route 3 that runs from Pittsburg north to the Canadian border is a popular place to view moose.

Moose viewing is a local hobby and tourist spectator sport. The best time to view moose is early in the morning and at dusk. Be careful; moose have been known to walk into the roadway. Drive slowly and stop if you encounter a moose.
