Origin:
Granted in 1769, the town was first named Cardigan, for George Brudenell, fourth Earl of Cardigan. The original name is still used in Mount Cardigan and Cardigan State Park. Voters made several attempts to change the name following the Revolution, trying the names Bradford, iddletown, Liscomb, and finally Orange. Orange was probably chosen because of the large quantities of yellow-orange ochre found in Mount Cardigan.
More about Orange:
The Town of Orange is a relatively small town in west central New Hampshire. The biggest portion of its land area is Mount Cardigan State Park.
The park is used mainly for leisurely mountain climbing and perhaps a picnic in the outdoors. The children of the community are educated at the Mascoma Valley Regional School District, which provides a K-12 curriculum in four separate school buildings. Orange is one of five towns that make up the school district. Orange is primarily a residential town having only one commercial enterprise and a few home businesses.
