Origin:
First granted in 1753 as Heidelberg, in honor of George II's visit to his German possessions at the time. The town was granted again in 1773 as Alexandria Addition, but the name didn't last. It was incorporated as New Londonderry, shortened to New London, in 1779. New London is home to Colby-Sawyer College, and includes the village of Elkins on Pleasant Lake.

More about New London:
New London is a town that is surrounded by clean lakes and spectacular mountain views. It's also a college town, thanks to Colby-Sawyer College's grand presence on Main Street. And it's a town that is rich with history, dating back to the late 1700's. But the real story about the town of New London is that it comes to life during the summer. In fact, it always has; unlike other college towns that empty out during summer months, vacationers have flocked to the area since the days before the automobile.

It is perhaps due to its close proximity to Lake Sunapee and other small nearby lakes that New London flourishes during the summer. But, New London has a charm and grace of its own that draws people to its quiet Main Street, with its delightful shops, quaint restaurants and quiet inns. They don't quite roll up the sidewalks at night but there is a leisurely pace around there that demands attention. It's the kind of place you want to walk around on a summery evening while waiting for your table for two at a local restaurant or tavern.
