Origin:
This town was first known as Hurd's Location, and then as West Lyman. It was separated from Lyman in 1854, and given the name Monroe in honor of President James Monroe, who toured the region during his presidency. Monroe contains part of the Ammonoosuc Gold Fields, extensive mineral deposits that have never been successfully mined.
More about Monroe:
Monroe is home to several dairy and poultry farms, like Pete and Gerry's Organic Eggs (see photo above). It's a small neighborly town where the whole town turns out for the annual town meeting.
