Origin:
Marlborough was first granted in 1752 as Monadnock Number 5, one of the fort towns first known only by number. The town was at one time called Oxford, then New Marlborough, but was incorporated as Marlborough. Many of the settlers were from Marlborough, Massachusetts, which had been named for John Churchill, Duke of Marlborough, in the late 1600s.
More about Marlborough:
There once was an important granite industry in Marlborough. Stone from town was used in fine Boston buildings, at Holy Cross College in Worcester, Mass., and locally. Blankets and woodenware, including toys, have also been manufactured here. Beautiful views of Mount Monadnock make Marlborough a popular summer vacation destination.
