Origin:
Once consisting of several large land grants given by Governor John Wentworth, the town was first named New Madbury, after the seacoast town. In 1800, the town was renamed in honor of President John Adams, who was then in office. The name Adams stuck until 1829, when Andrew Jackson was inaugurated President. Governor Benjamin Pierce, a staunch backer of President Jackson, was influential in changing the name of the town to Jackson.
More about Jackson:
Jackson is one of the region's most picturesque villages, famous in part by tumbling Jackson Falls and Jackson X-C, a 150+km cross country ski trail system, rated one of the best in the world.
Nearby, Wildcat Mountain has earned a reputation as a family favorite alpine ski destination. In the summer, Jackson Falls are enjoyed by many looking for a natural way to cool off. Not only do the falls offer a wonderful photo opportunity, but the pools and rippling waterfalls offer a refreshing break from hot summer days.
Jackson is best known for the postcard perfect red covered bridge in town. It is perhaps one of the most photographed covered bridges in the state.
