Origin:
First chartered as a part of Shelburne in 1770. The town was incorporated in 1836 and renamed Gorham at the suggestion of Sylvester Davis, a resident from Gorham, Maine, and a relative of the Gorham family who founded that town in 1764.

More about Gorham:
Home to the Mount Washington Auto Road, Gorham has been a popular destination for motorists since travelers first made the trek up the 6,288 foot mountain in 1861. The "Road to the Sky" was an unprecedented engineering achievement and remains the first man-made attraction in the United States!

Today, it awaits your personal voyage of discovery. Breathtaking vistas reveal themselves around every bend of the 8-mile path to the top of New England. The average grade of 12% slopes ever upward on the mostly paved road, reaching up more than a mile in the sky.
