Origin:
First granted in 1764 as Indian Head, settlers were unable to meet the terms of charter, and it was regranted in 1772 as Morristown. In 1782 the town was renamed Franconia, due to its resemblance to the Franconian Alps in Germany. The area of Franconia Notch is well-known for its natural features including Profile and Echo Lakes, The Flume, The Basin, and Mounts Lafayette, Lincoln, and Garfield. The Cannon Mountain Aerial Tramway was the first passenger tramway built in North America. Franconia is also the site of a rich iron deposit.

More about Franconia:
Franconia Village, lying along side of the Gale River, is home to The Frost Place, and The Stone Stack Iron Foundry Interpretative Center.

The Flume Gorge is in Franconia and is one of the most visited attractions in the state. Discovered in 1808, the Flume is a natural gorge extending 800 feet at the base of Mount Liberty. The walls of Conway granite rise to a height of 70 to 90 feet and are 12 to 20 feet apart.

Franconia village shopping area offers food markets, automotive service, real estate firms, restaurants, sports shop and other retail stores. There are many hotels and B&Bs located in Franconia. The Franconia Historical Society Museum offers a wonderful look back to bygone years. Picnic tables beside the river beckon one to stop, and enjoy a brief, relaxing respite.
