Origin:
Named for Frances Deering Wentworth, wife of Governor John Wentworth. Situated on the Second New Hampshire Turnpike, the sole route between Boston and Vermont, the town once collected a toll of one cent per mile from traveling coaches and wagons. Francestown was also the site of a high-quality soapstone quarry, which was mined until the 1890s.
More about Francestown:
Francestown holds a contra dance on the second Saturday of each month in the town hall. The dance is a lively one. There are often many children there and families with children are encouraged to come. Beginners and experienced dancers are welcomed.
Well-known author Dean Koontz was formerly a resident of Francestown.
