Origin:
First named Enfield by settlers from Enfield, Connecticut, the town was renamed Relhan in 1766 to honor Dr. Anthony Relhan. The doctor was a promoter of sea-bathing as a curative, making Brighton a fashionable English resort. The town was renamed Enfield in 1784 after the Revolution. Enfield was the site of a Shaker Community in the early 1800's. Some of its buildings are now occupied by the LaSalette Brotherhood of Montreal. The Shrine of Our Lady of La Salette is well-known for its Christmas holiday display. Enfield is home to Mascoma Lake and includes the villages of Upper and Lower Shaker Village and Lockehaven.
More about Enfield:
Mascoma Lake represents Enfield's lowest elevation at 751 feet above sea level. The highest is over 2000 feet in a small area near Halfmile Pond. The Enfield Shaker Museum offers opportunities to view the original Shaker settlement, and its gardens, in addition to featuring exhibits and demonstrations throughout the year. Enfield is also home to Whaleback Mountain.
