Origin:
Once a parish of Nottingham, Deerfield was incorporated as a town in 1766. It was named for Deerfield, Massachusetts, home of several early settlers. The town was home to John Simpson, who achieved fame by firing the first shot in the revolution, disobeying orders not to fire until you see the whites of their eyes.

The Deerfield Fair, which takes place in early October at the Deerfield Fairgrounds, is the oldest Agricultural Fair in New England.
