Origin:
The first settlement in 1659 was named Penacook, for the Indian name "Pannukog," meaning crooked place or bend in the river. The first land grant was in 1725, and the town was incorporated as Rumford in 1733. The name was changed to Concord in 1765 upon resolution of a bitter boundary dispute between Rumford and Bow. Concord became the state capital in 1808. The State House, built in 1818 and first occupied in 1819, is the oldest in continuous use in the country. In 1853, the state granted Concord a city charter. It was in Concord that the Abbotts built the famous Concord Coach, modeled after King George III's coronation coach.

More about Concord:

Concord sits beside the Merrimack River and you'll often see fishermen casting into the water. In addition to being the state capital, Concord has many attractions. You'll find great performances at the Capitol Center for the Arts. Consider dining at Margarita's Restaurant, which is located on the site of a former jail. You can actually enjoy your Mexican cuisine while seated in an old cell.

The Christa McAuliffe Planetarium is named for the New Hampshire teacher who would have been the first teacher in space. Her life ended tragically with the Challenger explosion in 1986. Other important places include the McLane Center at the Silk Farm Audubon Center, the Franklin Pierce Mansion, the Museum of New Hampshire History and the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests.
