Origin:
Part of a large tract granted to Dartmouth College, portions of the land were sold to raise cash for the college. Purchased by Joseph Murdoch of Norwich, Vermont, and Benjamin Clark of Boston, and cleared for settlement by the Clark family, the town was named Clarksville. It was also known as Dartmouth College Grant until 1872. The town is south only to Pittsburg.
More about Clarksville:
Situated along NH Route 145, Clarksville presents scenic splendor on every hand. The unexpected valleys and notches, rolling farmlands and grazing cattle recall the pastoral New England of yesteryear. Clarksville Pond lies within its boundaries. A historic marker in town identifies the 45th parallel, a point that lies halfway between the North Pole and the Equator.
