Origin:
Once a part of Chester, the town was known as Charmingfare, probably because of the many bridle paths or parades through pleasant scenery. It was named Candia in 1763 by Governor Benning Wentworth, possibly in memory of his sea travels following his graduation from Harvard. Candia was the name for the principal city of Crete.

More about Candia:
Candia maintains a rural beauty in the rolling hills twelve miles east of Manchester, New Hampshire. Candia is also the birthplace of the poet, journalist and publisher, Sam Walter Foss. Foss is best known for The House by the Side of the Road, which is believed to have been inspired by his boyhood home located on Brown Road.

Charmingfare Farm is also located in Candia. The farm is home to traditional agricultural animals and other more unusual animals, including a cougar, a wolf and a lynx. The farm also offers hayrides and sleigh rides during winter months.
