Origin:
Chartered in 1761, the town probably took its name from the hometown of early settlers from Canaan, Connecticut, which was named for the biblical land.
More about Canaan:
Canaan is home to one of several private college preparatory schools in the area, the Cardigan Mountain School. The town lies at the base of Mount Cardigan and hiking trails are abundant in the surrounding area.
On September 15, 1907, Canaan was the site of a famous train wreck between a Boston and Maine freight train and a Quebec to Boston express train filled with passengers. Twenty-five people were killed and many more were injured in the head-on collision.
