Origin:
Settled in 1726 by Scottish-Irish immigrants, the town was first named Coleraine. It was later named Brookfield, after a town of the same name in Massachusetts, and was made part of Middleton. In 1794, it became an independent town, a popular settlement for farmers because of the fertile ground.
More about Brookfield:
Early Brookfield was home to grist, bobbin, cider and shingle mills, saw-mills, tanneries, cobbler and shoemaker shops, blacksmiths, and inns. Today it remains a rural community with less than 1,000 residents.
