Stand-up comedienne and actress Sarah Silverman was born in Bedford on December 1, 1970. She was a student of the Derryfield School in Manchester. Silverman got her start on Saturday Night Live as a writer and featured character, but she only logged in one season on the show. Because only one of her skits made it to the air, she used that as fodder for her appearance on the Larry Sanders Show. She has since appeared on HBO's sketch comedy show, Mr. Show with Bob and David, followed by several guest appearances on shows like Seinfeld, Entourage and Star Trek: Voyager.
Her success skyrocketed in 2005 when she released her own feature film, Sarah Silverman: Jesus is Magic to limited theaters. The film went to DVD in the summer of 2006. After that, Silverman debuted her own show, The Sarah Silverman Program on Comedy Central in February 2007.
Sarah's comic style is somewhat controversial and could perhaps be considered edgy, or even over the edge. She was raised by Jewish parents, so the topic of religion is often on the table. She has also addressed issues like sex and racism in her shows. She has three sisters, Susan Silverman, a feminist rabbi and author, Laura Silverman, also an actress, and screenwriter Jody Silverman. Her interest in comedy began early on, and she performed for the first time at the club "Stitches" in Boston at the young age of 17.
Silverman has appeared in several films including the cult hit, There's Something About Mary, Bulworth, The Bachelor and School of Rock. She has also provided one of the featured voices for the hit show Crank Yankers. In 2007, she hosted the MTV Movie Awards and stirred up some controversy over her remarks toward heiress Paris Hilton. She also kicked off her own sitcom, The Sarah Silverman Program on Comedy Central. The program is one of Comedy Central's most successful shows, with a viewership of 1.8 million.
Silverman made Maxim Magazine's Hot 100 List in 2006, placing #50. She ranked #29 and appeared on the cover of the magazine the following year. She has been connected romantically with late-night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel.
