The Great North Woods - Moose Country
The crown of the state, known as the "north country" or the Great North Woods is probably best known for its snowmobiling trails and moose sightings. It is a place where you can look into the darkest night sky to see millions of stars without the distortion of nearby city lights, where often the loudest noise is the sound of your feet crunching over snow-covered paths.
It is home to towns like Dixville, where the first votes in the Presidential Primary are cast and Pittsburg, where hunting and fishing rules the day and snowmobile trails wind their way through acres of forest. Pittsburg is also known for Moose Alley, a place where moose are commonly seen along a stretch of Rte. 3.
The Connecticut River begins in Pittsburg and breaks off into a group of lakes known as the Connecticut Lakes. Fishing in these waters is first rate with species of fish ranging from rainbow trout to landlocked salmon. Along the Maine border, Lake Umbagog offers the angler an opportunity to catch smallmouth bass.
