Trump's budget: Sky fails to fall

President Donald Trump’s budget defies the laws of physics, at least as they are understood in Washington, D.C.

It turns out that funding for government programs must not always go up.

Trump’s budget isn’t particularly draconian. It cuts a lot of programs in order to fund increases for defense, homeland security and veterans programs. It also eliminates federal funding for 19 programs entirely. The horror!

New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof likened Trump’s budget proposal to the fall of Rome.

Among the victims of the barbarian horde are the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, the National Endowment for the Arts, and AmeriCorps.

Not every good thing in life must be funded by the federal government. As the national debt tops $20 trillion, serious people should no longer justify federal spending on artists and interns.

Trump’s plan does little to address entitlement spending. If Congress wants to restore discretionary programs, it should first shore up Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid.
