PELHAM — A Pelham man is accused of driving off after breaking a utility pole when he crashed into it with a pickup, police said.

Alan Desmettre, 64, was arrested on charges of driving under the influence and conduct after an accident following the crash, which happened shortly before midnight on Friday, police said in a release Sunday.

Officer Bruce Vieira responded to a call at 20 Ledge Road, where he found the utility pole split at the base, police said. Vieira searched the area and found Desmettre in a nearby driveway with his badly damaged truck, which had pieces of the pole lodged in its grill, according to the release.

Utility crews working on a damaged transformer nearby repaired the damage and the road was closed until 6 a.m. Saturday, police said.

Desmettre is scheduled to be arraigned at Salem District Court on March 19.
