Manchester police identify Market Basket purse-snatching suspect as Hill man

October 13. 2016 12:18PM

MANCHESTER — Police are looking for a Hill man for allegedly snatching the purse of an 82-year-old woman shopping Monday at Market Basket on Elm Street.

Police said that at 2:45 p.m., Janet Frost was at the Market Basket service desk, 460 Elm St. A man standing next to her, who police identified as Matthew Emerson, 45, last known address of 47 Old Town, Hill, watched her as she placed her purse in a shopping cart and begin to leave the store.

Emerson allegedly ran by her cart, grabbed the purse and continued out the door, running across the parking lot toward Elm Street, police said.

Witnesses chased after him but lost him near Valley Cemetery.

A Market Basket manager recognized Emerson through previous contacts, according to police, who said Emerson had returned to the store on another occasion trying to get a refund on meat he allegedly had stolen.

The image of the purse-snatcher, recorded on store surveillance, led to the identification of Emerson as the alleged thief.

He is wanted on three felony charges: attempted theft by deception, theft and falsifying physical evidence.

Police ask anyone knowing Emerson's whereabouts to call police at 668-8711. To remain anonymous, call Manchester Crimeline at 603-624-4040.
