DOVER — Liberty Mutual says it is eliminating 620 information technology jobs in New Hampshire, but many affected will be offered jobs elsewhere or retrained.

John Cusolito, vice president and manager of public and media relations, said Friday the company is aligning its workforce with the needs of customers, ultimately eliminating about 1,000 positions in operations globally.

“We are confident the number of employees impacted will be less than the number of positions we have eliminated, as we will help employees find other job opportunities in Liberty, either locally and elsewhere in our company. We are also offering employees the opportunity to participate in our ‘Go for Code’ retraining program, which provides employees with opportunities to participate in a coding immersion program to learn new skills that will allow them to transition to positions that we are creating,” Cusolito said in a statement.

Liberty Mutual currently has 425 IT positions open across the country that can be applied for, many of them in New Hampshire, Cusolito said. The company has already retrained 126 New Hampshire employees through its “Go for Code” program.

Liberty Mutual was unable to provide the exact number of Seacoast employees that will ultimately be affected. In March, the company announced 190 IT positions would be eliminated in New Hampshire, mainly in Dover and Portsmouth, and similar plans to rehire employees.

“The Seacoast and Granite State are home to Liberty’s IT headquarters and we remain committed to the region,” Cusolito said Friday.

The company is the fourth-largest property and casualty insurer in the United States. Its policies include home, auto and commercial products.

Liberty Mutual employs about 5,000 people in New Hampshire. Across the country, they have approximately 4,900 IT employees. About 53 percent, or more than 2,600, of those IT employees are located in the Granite State, Cusolito said.

Liberty Mutual employs more than 50,000 at more than 800 locations around the world. Nationally, it has about 3,400 open job listings. A new campus with two 19-story towers opening in Plano, Texas, at a cost $325 million is expected to employ 5,000, according to Cusolito.

In 2018, Liberty Mutual plans to move 2,700 employees to the new Texas campus with full occupancy expected by 2020, he said.

New Hampshire employees who cannot be retrained will be offered severance and outplacement resources, Cusolito said.

The company ranks 75th on the Fortune 100 list of largest corporations in the U.S. based on 2016 revenue. As of Dec. 31, 2016, Liberty Mutual had $38.3 billion in annual consolidated revenue, Cusolito said.
