Janet Evanovich

Novelist Janet Evanovich divides her time between her home in Hanover, New Hampshire and Naples, Florida. She was born on April 23, 1943 in South River, NJ, where she graduated from South River High School. She attended Douglass College in New Brunswick where she studied art. After college, Evanovich married and had children. She became a housewife, started writing romance novels, and eventually received an offer to buy her first manuscript for $2,000. That novel, Hero at Large was published in 1987 under the name Steffie Hall.

Janet wrote a series of romance novels for Bantam Loveswept before she decided to switch to the mystery genre. She actually studied with law enforcement before Stephanie Plum, the main character in her most successful series, was born. Her first Stephanie Plum novel, One for the Money was published in 1994. In 1995, she and her husband moved to New Hampshire, purchasing a "big 'ol house on the side of a hill, not far from Dartmouth College." The home has view of the Connecticut River Valley and sits on a couple of acres. She describes it as "a good place to write a book."

Her Stephanie Plum series was an immediate success. Her first book received good reviews, was named a New York Times notable book and she sold the movie rights to Columbia TriStar for $1 million. It is rumored that Katherine Heigl will portray Stephanie Plum, a female bounty hunter, in the film.

Her sixth book in the Plum series, Hot Six was her first book to reach number one on the New York Times Best Seller list. Since then, each of her Plum novels has debuted at number one, with her latest book, Smokin' Seventeen scheduled to be released in June 2011. She is known for letting her readers title her books, a practice which is unusual in the literary world. However, in an interview with Time Magazine, she explained, "I actually really suck at naming books, so lots of years ago, readers were sending in their ideas for titles, and what we realized is that they were smarter than us. So we thought, Hey, go for it. So now we have a contest every year."

Evanovich kicked off a new series in 2004; known as the "Barnaby Series," the first book was Metro Girl. A second book, Motor Mouth followed in 2006. Then in 2010, Trouble Maker I and II were released by Dark Horse Comics as graphic novels. She has also co-authored books with writer Charlotte Hughes. This resulted in a series too, known as the "Full" series. Her most recent series, the Diesel Series is a spin-off of the Stephanie Plum series, now has two novels, Wicked Appetite and Wicked Business, which is due out June 10, 2012.

In that same Time article, Evanovich described her workday. "I'm at my computer at 5:30 to 6 o'clock, and I spend a full day at that. Then around 1 o'clock, I have lunch. I get a little exercise. Then in the afternoon, I'm a businessperson. I think of myself as a professional. I get up in the morning and I go to work just like anybody else."

Janet has now authored more than 40 novels. She has been married to her husband Pete since 1964 and they have two adult children that work for Evanovich, Inc. In early 2012, One For the Money, the film, was released to theatres. The movie featured Katherine Heigl as Stephanie Plum.
