The MacDowell Colony is the leading artist colony in the United States, attracting writers, visual artists, filmmakers and even architects.

The Colony offers artists an inspiring environment and the solitude they desire to work on their discipline. It is the oldest such Colony in the country. Over the years it has served over 5,500 artists including Leonard Bernstein and Alice Walker as well as many Pulitzer Prize winners.

The MacDowell Colony offers presentations by their artists-in-residence on the first Friday of each month at the Peterborough town house from September-May as part of the "MacDowell Downtown" program. In August each year, on Medal Day, the Colony opens its doors and studios to the public. The main building and library are also open to the public during normal office hours.
