NH Foliage drive - Milford to Monadnock
Easily reached from Manchester, this Monadnock Region tour offers a choice of two mountain ascents, quaint villages and spectacular scenery.
From Milford, take 101 west. Passing through Temple, look for Miller State Park on right the right. For $3, you can drive or hike to the top of South Pack Monadnock. On summit you can climb part of a former fire tower for a better view and visit the new Audubon raptor observation station.
Back on 101A, proceed west on Route 101 through Peterborough into Dublin. You'll pass the village where Yankee Magazine is located, pass Dublin Lake with a view of Mount Monadnock. (If you're ambitious, detour south to Jaffrey and Monadnock State Park, where you can hike to the top of one of the most-climbed mountains on the planet.)
Take a right on the Harrisville/Chesham Road to the village of Harrisville, a picturesque mill pond surrounded by brick buildings.
Return to Route 101 via Route 137, noting the valley views of your left. Back to Peterborough, lunch is available at 12 Pine in Depot Square or the nearby well-known Peterborough Diner.
From there, take Route 202 east, then right on Route 136 to Greenfield. You can visit Greenfield State Park or stop at the Yankee Siege, a catapult that launches pumpkins at the Yankee Farmer, just before you get into Lyndeborough. Before the village, take a left on Center Road and travel through apple orchard country.
Back in Milford, there are native fruits and vegetables at the Fitch's Corner farmstand, where a right turn will get you back where you started.
