New Hampshire is one of the best places in the world to witness the brilliant crimsons and golds of fall. To help visitors decide when to take a tour of the countryside, NewHampshire.com will publish weekly updates on how the fall colors are progressing during the fall foliage season.

Best time to see foliage?

The foliage peaks at different times in different parts of the state. Generally, the best times to view the fall colors are near the end of September in the far north, the beginning of October in the White Mountain region, and the middle of October in the south.

The Monadnock Region is now experiencing peak foliage. If you really want to capture the feeling of living in a painting, you will need to get to the highest peaks in the Monadnock Region. Pack Monadnock, which can be found in Peterborough, is 2,200 feet at the summit. There is a paved winding, foliage lined road leading to the summit if you can't hike or would rather hike the bigger Monadnock (which we'll mention in a moment. The road is open on fall weekends. On clear days you can see Mount Washington, the skyscrapers of Boston, and the Vermont hills. If you want to feel small, this is where you want to be. Start early and take Route 202 South toward the Town of Jaffrey. From there, head west on Route 124. You will find Mount Monadnock State Park at 3,165-ft. Monadnock is considered the second most climbed mountain in the world after Mount Fiji in Japan. Check that one of the ol' bucket list! If you would rather not don a backpack and drag the little ones up a mountain - fun times! - there is a terrific event happening this weekend - the Monadnock Pumpkin Festival - which will be held at the Cheshire Fairgrounds in Swanzey. Make that a part of your weekend and you can experience a true "Yankee" Fall experience. Enjoy!
