New Hampshire is one of the best places in the world to witness the brilliant crimsons and golds of fall. To help visitors decide when to take a tour of the countryside, NewHampshire.com will publish weekly updates on how the fall colors are progressing during the fall foliage season.

When is foliage at its best?

The foliage peaks at different times in different parts of the state. Generally, the best times to view the fall colors are near the end of September in the far north, the beginning of October in the White Mountain region, and the middle of October in the south.

Updated October 18, 2017

The White Mountains Region is now in peak foliage, decorating an already spectacular view. It's no longer a splash of color here or a pop of blush there. It's a full on palette of color from one end to the other. We are going to suggest a drive (a long one really) from North Conway. Start there and head north on Route 302 West and North through the dramatic sights of Crawford Notch where there are views of Mount Washington, the highest peak in the northeast. Or, head north on Route 302 and stop in Jackson, spending the day looking for the "Pumpkin People" - there are 80 of them spread out across town! Jackson will also be hosting the 3rd Annual New England Pumpkin Carving Competition. But back to Crawford Notch and Route 302 past the Omni Mount Washington Resort. Hit Route 3 North for a few miles until you bump into Route 115 North and make your way to Jefferson for the Silly, Spooky Halloween event at Santa's Village. It's a whole lot of family fun as one holiday collides with another!

*Enjoy this last week of peak foliage in this area as the leaves will be turning russet, burgundy and brown before falling to litter the ground and leaving the trees bare for the months ahead.
