ALEXANDRIA - A 60-year-old Massachusetts hiker was carried off Cardigan Mountain Wednesday afternoon after suffering a medical emergency, state Fish and Game officials said.

Rescuers were called to the mountain just before 1 p.m. after it was reported that Ed Goodreau of Lexington couldn't complete his hike due to a medical situation. Goodreau was coming down the Holt Trail after summiting the mountain with his wife, officials said.

Alexandria and Bristol firefighters as well as a Fish and Game conservation officer and rescuers from the AMC Cardigan Lodge found Goodreau about seven-tenths of a mile from the Cardigan Lodge about 1:45 p.m., according to a news release. He was treated at the scene by paramedics, then carried to the lodge parking lot, arriving about 2:45 p.m., the release said.

Bristol Ambulance took Goodreau to the center of Alexandria, where a DHART helicopter picked him up and took him to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon for evaluation, officials said.
