The Take Your Daughter to Jail Act

The crisis of children crossing into the United States illegally has been going on since 2014, when the number of unaccompanied minors showing up at the border greatly increased.

The Obama administration herded children into detention centers, and most of us stopped paying attention. As President Obama told us, "We didn't have a scandal that embarrassed us."

A lawsuit filed last week alleges that children in a detention center in Virginia were beaten, locked in solitary confinement, and left nude in concrete cells.

But that was before President Donald Trump's zero tolerance policy increased the number of children separated from families caught entering the United States illegally, and then claiming asylum.

Senate Democrats filed a bill to stop family separation so quickly that they didn't have time to read it.

New Hampshire Sens. Jeanne Shaheen and Maggie Hassan joined every Democrat in cosponsoring the Keep Families Together Act.

The bill would not just prevent children from being taken from parents while their asylum claims are adjudicated, or even just from children of illegal immigrants. It would prevent federal agencies from removing children from any parent arrested within 100 miles of the border.

If you ever wanted to commit a federal crime, be sure to take along a kid as your "Get Out Of Jail Free" card.

Perhaps the senators didn't mean to let suspected criminals get away with anything. Maybe they want to keep families together, in federal custody. Call it the Take Your Daughter to Jail Act of 2018.

Shaheen and Hassan should be embarrassed for backing this sloppy, opportunistic bill without knowing what is in it.
