CONCORD — The Executive Council voted unanimously Wednesday to approve Gov. Chris Sununu’s nomination of Salem Fire Chief Paul Parisi to replace retiring State Fire Marshal J. William Degnan.

Parisi has served as Salem’s fire chief, emergency management director and fire warden since June 2015. He started his career as a firefighter in Salem in 1989.

“Chief Parisi has had a long and distinguished career protecting the people of Salem, and I am excited to have him lead the team over at the Division of Fire Safety,” said Sununu earlier this month. “Chief Parisi brings a unique perspective to the State Fire Marshal’s office, and I have no doubt that he will work to ensure that New Hampshire continues to be the best state for business in the many years ahead.”

Parisi was recommended for the post by Commissioner of Safety John Barthelmes, who described him as qualified for the position “by reason of his extensive education and experience in the fire service, as well as his dedication to the mission of public safety and the leadership in his field.”

The Professional Firefighters of New Hampshire endorsed the nomination after opposing Degnan’s reappointment through most of 2016.

“I am humbled and honored to be recommended by Commissioner Barthelmes and nominated by Governor Sununu for the position of state fire marshal,” Parisi said earlier this month. “I have spent nearly 30 years in the New Hampshire Fire Service, and am very excited to get to work in this new position. I look forward to working with all of the stakeholders of the Division of Fire Safety. Together, we can build solid relationships, and continue to keep New Hampshire safe for our residents and visitors.”

Parisi will complete Degnan’s term, which continues until March 31, 2020. Degnan plans to retire in July, according to the governor’s office.

Degnan has served as fire marshal since 2004 and was renominated by Sununu at his first Executive Council meeting as governor in January 2017.
