Cristiano Ronaldo scored on a header four minutes in and Portugal held on for a 1-0 victory Wednesday in Moscow that eliminated Morocco from World Cup contention.

Ronaldo connected on a cross from Joao Moutinho for his fourth goal in two games.

Morocco led the way in possession time and shots, but fell to its second 1-0 defeat in two Group B games.

Uruguay 1, Saudi Arabia 0

Luis Suarez took advantage of a corner kick that sailed over the goalkeeper and onto his foot, putting the ball into the net in the 23rd minute to score what would be the match’s lone goal in Rostov.

The win put both Uruguay and host Russia into the knockout round from Group A while eliminating the Saudis and Egypt. Uruguay and Russia, both 2-0-0 with six points, will settle the Group A winner when they play Monday in Samara.

A draw would give the group to Russia as it leads all countries with a plus-7 goal differential.

Spain 1, Iran 0

Diego Costa scored in the 54th minute and the heavily favored Spanish withstood numerous close calls at the net throughout the game to pick up three valuable points in a Group B match at Kazan.

A loss would have left Spain, one of the World Cup favorites, with just a slim chance at making it out of the group stage. Instead, Spain now sits tied atop the group standings with Portugal at four points. Spain and Portugal tied 3-3 in their World Cup opener last Friday.

Iran sits in third place in the group with three points while Morocco is in last with two losses. Spain will face Morocco and Iran will take on Portugal to wrap up Group B play on Monday.
