DALLAS — Though the Miss America Organization eliminated the swimsuit portion of its competition Tuesday, this year's Miss Texas Scholarship Pageant will proceed as planned — including swimwear.
The Texas competition is an official preliminary to the Miss America competition, and pageant spokesman Valerie Bell said that having women compete in a swimsuit category at the state level but not the national level should have no effect on the Miss America pageant.
Bell also said the swimsuit portion of Miss Texas, known as “lifestyle and fitness,” is not a large part of the judging — worth 10 percent of a contestant's score, compared with 30 percent for talent, 20 percent for on-stage question and 15 percent for evening wear.
“The Miss Texas Scholarship Organization will follow the guidelines set forth by the Miss America Board and look forward to the new direction of the Miss America Organization,” Jan Mitchell, the Texas pageant's executive director, said in a statement. “I have been involved as a volunteer of the organization for many years and have seen the evolution of the competition and the beauty of the determination of the women who compete for college scholarships.”
The Miss Texas pageant was founded in 1936 and boasts the purpose of “providing personal and professional opportunities for young Texas women and promoting their voice in culture, politics, and community.”
The Miss Texas Scholarship Pageant will take place June 26-30 at the Charles W. Eisemann Center for Performing Arts in Richardson.
