THORNTON - A Rumney couple who had set out on a loop hike Monday afternoon had to call 911 and needed rescue after realizing they weren't on the trail they intended and it was getting dark, officials said.

Rose Medeiros, 59 and her husband, Jorge, had set out about 1:30 p.m., intending to hike a 1.8 mile loop that would end where it had started, according to a Fish and Game department release. Four hours later, they realized they hadn't reached their destination and called 911.

Conservation officers used GPS coordinates to find them on the Smart Brook Trail about 4 miles from where they started.

The couple was helped back to the trailhead, arriving at about 9 p.m, officials said.
