MANCHESTER — CarMax plans to open its first New Hampshire location Feb. 15.

“We estimate the Manchester location to have approximately 240 used vehicles of nearly every make and model in stock on the day of the grand opening,” CarMax spokesman Lindsey Duke said Tuesday.

The dealership, which occupies the former Walmart site off South Willow Street, will have 21 employees, she said.

Several car dealers said in October they welcomed CarMax’s arrival.

“It will drive plenty of foot traffic” to showrooms of several auto dealers operating nearby, said Ralph Fast, general manager of Team Nissan, which, like CarMax, is along Keller Street.

Some dealers reported foot traffic dropped after Walmart closed its store in April 2016 and opened a bigger one on Gold Street.

CarMax, a Fortune 500 company that sells only used cars at fixed prices, said about 90 percent of purchasers start on CarMax.com or the CarMax mobile app.

The company bills itself as the nation’s largest retailer of used cars and operates more than 185 stores in 40 states.

During the 12 months ending last Feb. 28, the company retailed 671,294 used cars and sold 391,686 wholesale vehicles at its in-store auctions.
