RYE — The Rye Lions Club recently donated a SeeCoast Mark I Telescope to the Seacoast Science Center in Rye. The viewer will be installed this spring on the seaside lawn of the center in Odiorne Point State Park.

The telescope has an optical power of 20X, which makes objects and views appear 20 times closer. The club says the telescope is ideal for long-distance viewing for points of interest in the Gulf of Maine, wildlife viewing and coastal birding.

The viewer will be free and available to the public. It will bring four lighthouses — Portsmouth Harbor, Whaleback, Star Island and Boon Island — into clear view, as well as the mouth of the Piscataqua River, Wood Island, the Isle of Shoals, and the shoreline of Kittery, Maine.

Seacoast Science Center President Jim Chase said, “We are thrilled to accept this generous gift from the Rye Lions Club. The viewer will connect visitors to our coastal environment in a new, exciting way and be a catalyst for countless teachable moments.”

The Seacoast Science Center is located in Odiorne Point State Park at 570 Ocean Blvd.
