The Dana Center, world-class performing arts on the campus of Saint Anselm College, is proud to present Afrobeat Masters: Haitian artist, Wesli and ILAM from Senegal,
on Thursday, Jan. 25, at 7:30 p.m.
"(Wesli is) the most formidable creature in world music Montreal presently has to offer the rest of the plant." - Alain Brunet, La Presse
Born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, Wesli built his first guitar out of an old NGO- provided oil can and nylon shoe lace when he was just eight years old. Coming from a family of 8 children where music was a daily food for the soul, it became second nature to him, a unique and vital way out of the violence and misery found in the surrounding ghetto. Ever since, Wesli has worked relentlessly, perfecting his art, his only hope for a better life. Be it in an acoustic formation (guitar, voice and percussion) or with his big band, Wesli consistently delivers a rich, festive and uniquely engaging sound. He conquers the heart of his audience through complex musical arrangements and universal messages of hope, truth and peace.
"ILAM is the new rising afro-pop voice to discover" - Mélanie Pinto, Huffington Post Quebec
Joining Wesli is Senegalese artist, ILAM who delivers a style that is filled to the brim with different musical spices. Combining a rhythmic blend of reggae and blues with inclinations of Afro-folk and crossbreeding accents of pop or rock, ILAM's voice evokes the depth and power of nomadic people in a mesmerizing and urban atmosphere. Both award-winning artists are now based in Montreal and are bringing their rare sound and soul to the Dana Center stage in a performance that you won't want to miss!
