Uncanoonuc Lake Dam work expected to start this summer

GOFFSTOWN — Major repair work on a dam in town is expected to begin this summer.

After failing a state inspection five years ago, the final pieces to start the Uncanoonuc Lake Dam Rehabilitation project are expected to fall into place soon.

The work will consist of installing a new principal spillway system, which is what controls the flow of the water. This includes the concrete drop inlet riser, the outlet barrel and new outlet headwall.

The embankment also will be built up from what is currently there.

During this time, a new cofferdam, which will control the water flow, also will be installed.

In 2012, the town received a Letter of Delinquency from the state’s Department of Environmental Services about the dam. It stated that there were breaks and spalls that needed to be sealed in the concrete of the dam.

The letter also asked that some vegetation be removed from around the structure.

Efforts to ready the dam in Uncanoonuc Lake off Mountain Base Road for a full rehabilitation project has been in the works since then.

According to a Request for Proposal, the work will start in June and run through the end of September.

The project is being designed by Dubois & King, Inc., which was awarded the contract in 2012.

“It’s still in permitting, but it’s very close to final approval,” Public Works Director Meghan Theriault said of the designs

Bids will be accepted until Dec. 7. The plan is to have the candidate chosen at the following board of selectmen meeting Dec. 11.

At this past Town Meeting, residents voted to raise $230,000 to help pay for the project.
