BRENTWOOD — A Sandown man who died while target shooting in Brentwood earlier this month was shot when he handed his loaded revolver to a juvenile and it accidentally discharged, the Rockingham County Attorney’s Office said Monday.

The victim was identified Monday as 51-year-old Christopher Shewokis. According to a news release from the county attorney’s office, Brentwood police responded to an emergency call for an accidental shooting at Deer Run Wildlife Management Area on Pine Road on the afternoon of Nov. 4.

After arriving, police learned that Shewokis was target shooting with an adult friend and a juvenile.

The county attorney’s office said that while the adult friend was adjusting the targets, Shewokis loaded his Ruger .22 revolver.

"While giving instruction, Mr. Shewokis then handed the firearm to the juvenile. The revolver accidentally discharged a round into Mr. Shewokis' chest. Sadly, Mr. Shewokis died as a result of his injury," the news release said.

The state Medical Examiner’s Office ruled the death accidental.

"County Attorney Patricia Conway and the Brentwood Police Department express their sincere condolences to the deceased’s family," the release said.

The family has asked for privacy.

According to his obituary, Shewokis most recently worked as operations manager for Rectrix Aerodome in Bedford, Mass.

His obituary described him as a licensed private pilot who enjoyed fishing, hunting, four-wheeling and dirt bike riding. He was also a Red Sox and Patriots fan and enjoyed star gazing.

A former Derry resident who grew up in Connecticut, Shewokis was married for 24 years to wife, Suzanne, and was the father of two daughters.

Funeral services for Shewokis were held Friday.
