Manchester native Adam Sandler will receive the Hollywood Comedy Award for his performance in the Netflix feature film “The Meyerowitz Stories” at the 21st annual Hollywood Film Awards on Sunday, according to Dick Clark Productions.
The film, which was directed and written by Noah Baumbach, also stars Ben Stiller, Emma Thompson and Dustin Hoffman.
Sandler, a Golden Globe-nominated actor, went from a recurring role as the Huxtable family’s friend Smitty on “The Cosby Show” to “Saturday Night Live.” Sandler then went on to the movies, starring in comedies including “Airheads,” “Happy Gilmore,” “Billy Madison” and “Big Daddy.”
He also starred in “Mr. Deeds” alongside Winona Ryder; “Eight Crazy Nights,” an animated movie about the Jewish festival of Chanukah; and “Punch-Drunk Love.”
He also writes and produces many of his own films and has composed songs for several of them, including “The Wedding Singer.” He’s had several songs placed on the Billboard charts, including the classic “The Chanukah Song.”
James Corden will host the film awards Sunday at The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, Calif.
