UNH hockey, football teams move up in polls

October 23. 2017 9:23PM

National poll voters have noticed the University of New Hampshire men’s hockey team.

The Wildcats, who are 5-1-0, are ranked 12th in the latest USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll — they were unranked last week — and 14th (up from 17th) in USCHO.com balloting released on Monday.

Denver (2-0-2) tops both polls.

Meanwhile, freshman defenseman Max Gildon on Monday was named Hockey East Rookie of the Week for his weekend performance against Colorado College. Gildon had a hat trick in UNH’s 6-3 victory on Friday night, then scored the team’s only goal in a 2-1 overtime loss on Saturday night.

The Wildcats play only one game this coming weekend, on Saturday night at Vermont.

UNH gridders 16th/17th

The Wildcats football team, coming off a 40-17 thumping of Towson on Saturday, jumped from 18th to 16th in the FCS Coaches’ Poll and 18th to 17th in the STATS FCS Top 25.

UNH’s DeUnte Chatman, a redshirt freshman running back, was named the CAA football Rookie of the Week for his career-high 187 rushing yards and two touchdowns.

New Hampshire visits the consensus top team in the country, James Madison (7-0) on Saturday in Harrisonburg, Va.

Schmidt honored

UNH graduate student Robin Schmidt, of Cologne, Germany, was named the America East Soccer Player of the Week, it was announced on Monday. Schmidt scored twice in the Wildcats’ 4-2 win over Dartmouth, then tallied both goals in a 2-0 victory over Stony Brook. He leads the club, which is ranked 18th nationally, with six goals. The Wildcats play next on Saturday night at UMass Lowell.

PSU remains No. 3

The Plymouth State football team remained third in New England Division III voting this week. Springfield (8-0) remained No. 1.

The Panthers, who beat Mass. Maritime 40-14 on Saturday to improve to 7-1, host Westfield State this coming Saturday at 1 p.m.
