NHIAA Tournaments: Gilford tops Berlin to gain Div. III field hockey semis

October 22. 2017 10:36PM

GILFORD — Laurel Gingrich scored the game’s only goal and goalie Jenna DeLucca posted a shutout as fourth-seeded Gilford tipped No. 5 Berlin 1-0 in an NHIAA Division III field hockey tournament quarterfinal on Sunday.

Gingrich took a pass from Jillian Lachapelle in front of the goal and fired home a 5-yard shot that eluded Berlin goalie Kate Host, giving the Golden Eagles all the offense they would need. DeLucca made five saves, at least three of them tough ones, and Host stopped two shots.

“Whenever we play them, it’s a close game,” said Gilford coach Dave Rogacki. “Both teams really respect each other.”

Gilford advanced to play top seed Newfound of Bristol on Thursday in the late semifinal at Exeter High. Newfound won both meetings of the clubs during the regular season, 3-1 and 1-0. Gilford beat the Bears 2-1 in last season’s semifinals.
