Standing by Bill Gardner

September 17. 2017 6:05PM

To the Editor: I note with interest the pressure being placed by Democrats on New Hampshire Secretary of State Gardner to resign from the President’s Election Integrity Commission.

During my time in the Legislature, I was involved in writing legislation to develop adequate safeguards to assure that only voters eligible to vote in New Hampshire are able to do so. During this time, we worked with Secretary Gardner and his staff to make sure that the steps we took were not administratively burdensome or difficult for voters to undertake.

Bill Gardner always maintained a professional approach, understanding the importance of safeguards as well as the need not to burden the voter unnecessarily. His steady hand and vast knowledge of the voting process were of great value in crafting balanced legislation, and I am sure he will make significant contributions to the President’s commission. I hope he continues to reject partisan efforts by the Democrats, including Sen. Hassan and Sen. Shaheen, to force him off the commission.
