Berberian takes second at New England PGA

Rich Berberian finished tied for second Wednesday in the 2017 New England PGA Section Championship.
The Hooksett resident carded a 1-under par 71 at the Renaissance Golf Course in Haverhill, Mass. Berberian (66-74-71-211) ended three strokes behind winner Liam Friedman (70-69-69-208, 8-under) of Concord, Mass., and tied with Ron Philo of Stowe Mountain Club (70-71-70-211). Berberian, who won this tournament in 2014 and 2015, and Philo were both 5-under for the tournament.
Berberian, playing out of Vesper CC in Tyngsborough, Mass., was 1-under at the turn during his round Wednesday and 2-under after scoring an eagle on the par-four 12th hole. But he bogeyed the next hole and double-bogeyed on hole 14 to go one-over. He managed to birdie holes 16 and 18 to close out his round at one-under 71.
Berberian was the first-day leader in the 54-hole tournament after shooting a 6-under 66 round Monday with eight birdies and two bogeys.
Claremont native Kirk Hanefeld, who started Wednesday seven shots behind the leaders in an 11th place tie (71-75-71-217), finished tied for sixth with Shawn Warren of Falmouth CC. Hanefeld is a three-time New England PGA champion and a two-time Senior PGA Pro National champion.
Rico Riciputi (73-78-73-224) of Wentworth-by-the-Sea ended up tied for 18th, and knotted 24th overall was Southern New Hampshire University head coach Matt Arvanitis at 74-76-77-227. Jason Sedan (74-79-78-231) of Lake Winnipesaukee placed in a tie for 40th overall.
Berberian and Hanefeld of Salem, Mass., CC will play in next year’s PGA Professional Championship on June 17-20 at the Bayonet Black Horse of Seaside, Calif.
